Album Review: Ski Mask The Slump God – Slaps For My Drop-Top Mini Van EP

Slaps For My Drop-Top Mini Van seems to be the most recent EP or album related release from Ski Mask The Slump God, a rapper who has an undeniable distinct rapping style and talent. Ski Mask is also notably the best friend of XXXTentacion, who is one of the rappers that have impressed me the most in terms of creativity and style. The two founded a hip hop group called Very Rare Members Only and have appeared on a few songs together, however this EP is mainly just Ski Mask The Slump God and a different producer for each track. Slaps For My Drop-Top Mini Van features no other collaborators and only lasts six and half minutes spread across four tracks.

The first track “Intro (I Don’t Care)” is a minute long instrumental with stuttering hi hats and random singing bits. Honestly, this track is kind of pointless, I feel like this track only exists to make this EP four tracks long and longer than five minutes. In fact, this song is so worthless that not even the tracklist on the album art bothered listing it as a track…

“Like A Soccer Mom” is honestly the best track on this EP, as well as one of the best songs Ski Mask has ever released in my opinion. This track is lyrical, and Ski’s delivery and flow on this track is rapid, on tempo, and at some points of this song, a percussion instrument of it’s own. I love this song’s bridge, “Like why my roof look like a T-Rex done bit it? / My mini van got the Jigglypuff linen”, these lines are just so hilarious and also set the very cartoonish and playful vibe that Ski Mask plays on this EP. Speaking of cartoons, this track samples the theme song from that old Cartoon Network show, Codename: Kids Next Door.

The next song, “Death Is Long”, is the “dark” song on this EP with it’s atmospheric riff that sort of takes a backseat during the song. With lyrics like “Death is long but worth the wait.” it brings out a new side of the purp sipping Ski Mask that is dark but yet still manages to keep up the playful cartoonish vibe on this EP. Bits of the Spongebob Squarepants song “Sweet Victory” play in this song, keeping up with the theme of cartoon sampling. For those who do not remember, “Sweet Victory” is the song that plays on the “Is Mayonaise an Instrument” episode when Spongebob and the rest of Squidward’s Orchestra Band rise up on the podium in the middle of the human football stadium in order to impress and also beat down Squidward’s rival, Squilliam Fancyson. The sampling of that song almost screams “Sweet Victory I am going to be dead forever someday!”, I find that kind of funny, love this song.

The last track, “Did You Really???”, features a slower rapping style from Ski Mask when compared to “Like A Soccer Mom”, which is nice to hear every once in a while. I really love the bursts of bass noise in this track, it makes it stand out on this EP. The sampling of the Ed, Edd, n Eddy theme song does nothing but add on to the EP’s cartoonish style, a characteristic that I have now beaten into the ground many times over in this review. I will say the drum beats on this track are a little bit bland, but the Ed, Edd, n Eddy Saxophone samples make everything better.

Overall I would say I am a big fan of this album. While this is a release from last year, I do believe Ski Mask The Slump God is one of the most promising up-n-coming rappers of this half of the decade. This EP is a good way to get into Ski Mask’s music in my opinion, due to it’s short length it will leave you wanting more. Side note about this EP’s tracklist. The tracklist on the album art is different from the order of the tracks on the SoundCloud and Spotify albums, so I put these songs in this review in the order found on the album art, however, in the tracklist below they will be listed how they are most commonly found.
